"White Riot" foi o primeiro single de The Clash, lançado em 1977, e aparece no álbum de estreia na versão britânica em 1977 e na versão norte‑americana em 1979, com a mesma faixa regravada com introdução diferente.
A versão britânica tem 1:56 minutos, enquanto a versão single/americana tem 2:01, e o arranjo regravado começa com o som de sirene policial.
O trecho inicial “1‑2‑3‑4” de Mick Jones é um sinal de contagem que marca o início da música, mas na re‑gravação esse trecho foi substituído pelo som da sirene.
A letra foi escrita após a participação de Joe Strummer e Paul Simonon nas manifestações do Notting Hill Carnival de 1976, e visa mobilizar jovens brancos a encontrarem um motivo para protestar, ao contrário de acusações de promover ódio racial.
Embora seja considerado um clássico, Mick Jones, mais tarde na carreira, recusou‑se a tocar a faixa em shows por considerá‑la “crua e musicalmente inepta”.
