A música foi escrita pelos compositores Keith Stegall e Dan Hill e lançada em outubro de 1997 como single de abertura do álbum *Labor of Love* de Sammy Kershaw.
No Brasil, o single não entrou nas paradas oficiais, mas no mercado norte-americano atingiu o segundo lugar no *Billboard Hot Country Songs*, ficando atrás de Tim McGraw.
Na lista canadense, a faixa chegou ao terceiro lugar, demonstrando sucesso internacional além dos Estados Unidos.
O verso B da gravação original continha um dueto com Terri Clark, enquanto outras versões apresentavam a música “Roamin' Love” como verso B.
Em 1997, a banda sueca Ace of Base gravou uma versão de *Love of My Life* para um possível lançamento em seu terceiro álbum, mas a faixa não foi incluída na obra final.
