A gravação original de “Behind Blue Eyes” foi feita no Record Plant, em Nova York, em 18 de março de 1971, com Al Kooper tocando Hammond organ, e só apareceu como faixa bônus na edição remasterizada de 1995.
A versão lançada no álbum *Who’s Next* (1971) é a segunda gravação da música, construída a partir de um esquema de alternância de seções que também apareceu em “Won’t Get Fooled Again”.
O single entrou na Billboard Hot 100 americana em 6 de novembro de 1971, alcançando o pico no número 34, e também atingiu o número 24 na lista Cashbox.
O tema foi pensado como voz do antagonista Jumbo na narrativa de Lifehouse, refletindo a luta interna do personagem que se sente injustamente vilão apesar de seu desejo de ser bom.
A letra contém uma linha inspirada em um momento de tentação que Townshend viveu depois de um show em Denver em 9 de junho de 1970, onde ele recorreu à influência de seu mestre espiritual Meher Baba.
Embora tenha sido considerada para o mercado britânico, o single acabou sendo lançado em países como os EUA, França, Bélgica e Holanda, sendo acompanhado por “My Wife” nos EUA e por “Going Mobile” em alguns mercados europeus.
