[Chorus:] Irene, goodnight, Irene, goodnight, Goodnight, Irene, Goodnight, Irene, I'll see you in my dreams. Last Saturday night I got married, Me and my wife settle down, Now me and my wife are parted, I'm gonna take another stroll in town. [Chorus] Sometimes I live in the country, Sometimes I live in town, Sometimes I have a great notion, To jump in the river and drown. [Repeat Chorus]

A letra contém versos que fazem referência direta a fantasias suicidas, incluindo a frase “If Irene turns her back on me / I’ll take morphine and die” e “sometimes I take a great notion to jump in the river and drown”.
A expressão “a great notion to jump in the river and drown” serviu de inspiração para o título do romance de Ken Kesey de 1964, *Sometimes a Great Notion*, e para a música homônima de John Mellencamp de 1989, ambos refletindo a influência da música tradicional americana.
