“Teenage Kicks” foi escrita no verão de 1977 por J.J. O'Neill, guitarrista rítmico e principal compositor da banda.
A gravação da faixa ocorreu em 15 de junho de 1978 e foi lançada inicialmente em setembro daquele ano pelo selo independente Good Vibrations, de Belfast.
Após a assinatura com a Sire Records em 2 de outubro de 1978, a música foi relançada como single padrão em vinil em 14 de outubro e chegou ao nº 31 nas paradas do Reino Unido duas semanas depois.
O DJ da BBC Radio 1, John Peel, declarou “Teenage Kicks” como sua canção favorita de todos os tempos e, ao estreá‑la em 25 de setembro de 1978, tocou-a duas vezes seguidas – algo que nunca havia feito antes.
Peel pediu que trechos da letra fossem gravados em sua lápide, eternizando a importância da música para ele.
