Surfin' Bird foi lançada em 1963 como uma música de surf rock e é na verdade uma medley que combina os refrões dos dois clássicos do R&B dos anos 60, "The Bird Is The Word" e "Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow", ambos do grupo doo-wop The Rivingtons.
Em 1987, o filme de guerra de Stanley Kubrick, *Full Metal Jacket*, incluiu a faixa na trilha sonora, trazendo a música para um novo público.
A canção foi reinterpretada por bandas de gêneros distintos, incluindo The Ramones, Sodom, The Cramps, Pee Wee Herman e Silverchair, além da aparição de Peter Griffin em um episódio de *Family Guy*.
