O single foi lançado pela A&M Records em maio de 1970 e tornou-se o maior sucesso da gravadora desde “This Guy’s in Love with You” de Herb Alpert, em 1968.
No álbum *Close to You* a música encerra com um fade, mas os vocais “wahhhs” de Karen e Richard continuam de sobreposição.
Em 1971 os Carpenters receberam o Grammy de Melhor Performance Contemporânea de Duo, Grupo ou Coral por “(They Long to Be) Close to You”, além do prêmio de Melhor Artista Revelação.
A composição foi escrita por Burt Bacharach e Hal David e originalmente gravada em 1963 por Richard Chamberlain, sendo o verso “Blue Guitar” que teve maior sucesso.
Richard Chamberlain contou que, quando Herb Alpert lhe apresentou a música em 1970, ele estava cético, mas acabou colaborando na gravação final.
