A faixa foi incluída no filme e no álbum de televisão *Magical Mystery Tour* de 1967.
"I Am the Walrus" funcionou como a B-side do sucesso número 1 "Hello, Goodbye".
Lennon juntou três músicas que estava desenvolvendo para criar a composição avant‑garde que se tornou o clímax criativo do trio.
O título faz referência ao personagem do poema “The Walrus and the Carpenter” de Lewis Carroll, do qual Lennon se decepcionou ao descobrir que o walrus era o vilão.
No álbum *White Album* (1968), Lennon afirmou que o walrus representava Paul McCartney, em “Glass Onion”.
