A música foi escrita por Liam Sternberg, que originalmente gravou uma demo com Marti Jones em 1984 e ofereceu a faixa para Toni Basil, mas foi a cantora Lene Lovich que gravou a primeira versão, embora esta nunca tenha sido lançada.
As vocalizações principais foram divididas entre Vicki Peterson, Michael Steele e Susanna Hoffs nos três primeiros versos, enquanto a baterista Debbi Peterson acabou relegada aos vocais de apoio, o que causou tensão no grupo devido também à substituição de sua bateria por uma máquina de ritmos.
