“Rock Lobster” foi gravada e lançada como single pela primeira vez em abril de 1978 pela DB Records, servindo como o primeiro lançamento da banda.
Em 1979 a faixa foi regravada e incluída no álbum de estreia homônimo da B-52's, distribuído pela Warner Bros. nos EUA e pela Island Records na Europa e Japão.

O nome do time de hóquei profissional de Athens, Geórgia, foi inspirado na música, sendo chamado de Rock Lobsters.
