“Family Affair” foi gravado em parte dentro de uma Winnebago, com Sly Stone tocando baixo e programando a bateria, mas contou apenas com sua irmã Rose nos vocais e com músicos convidados como Billy Preston no teclado e Bobby Womack no violão.
A canção tornou‑se a primeira música a chegar ao topo do Billboard Hot 100 usando um ritmo gerado por máquina (programado em rhythm box), mantendo o número‑um por três semanas consecutivas.
Embora Sly Stone tenha considerado a faixa “não forte o suficiente” para ser lançada como single, a pressão da manager e da Epic Records conseguiu convencê‑lo, resultando em um dos maiores sucessos da carreira da banda.
O hit foi regravado por artistas como Iggy Pop, Bunny Wailer, e até em 1993 por Shabba Ranks (junto a Patra e Terri & Monica) para a trilha sonora de *Addams Family Values*, chegando ao número 84 na Billboard pop e número 6 no Hot Rap Tracks.
