A versão original da música, gravada em 1982, já existia nas composições de The Frantic Elevators, o grupo de Mick Hucknall antes de formar o Simply Red.
O videoclipe foi filmado na cidade de Whitby, no norte da Inglaterra, escolhendo cenários de isolamento que reforçaram a temática de abandono descrita na letra.
Em 1986, ao ser relançado, a música alcançou o primeiro lugar na parada Billboard Hot 100 dos Estados Unidos, tornando-se a única faixa número um da banda naquele país.
