A música foi escrita em parceria entre Seal e o produtor Trevor Horn, ambos da mesma faixa‑título de seu segundo álbum, *Seal II*.
O single original saiu em julho de 1994, mas só atingiu o topo da Billboard Hot 100 em agosto de 1995 após a re‑lançamento e inclusão no soundtrack de *Batman Forever*.
Em 1996, *Kiss from a Rose* conquistou três prêmios do Grammy: Record of the Year, Song of the Year e Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.
O videoclipe oficial tem duas versões: a primeira, em um estúdio fotográfico, e a segunda, dirigida por Joel Schumacher, que mostra Seal cantando ao lado do Bat‑Signal e intercalada com cenas de *Batman Forever*; a segunda se tornou a mais conhecida e contou com a direção de fotografia de Neil Abramson.
Na edição do filme *Batman Forever*, a música recebe ajustes de tempo e foi incorporada ao filme, impulsionando sua popularidade na América e na Austrália.
