A faixa "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" foi gravada no dia 30 de janeiro de 1990 na casa da mãe do engenheiro Ian Catt, em Pollards Hill, e lançada em maio do mesmo ano.

O vocal da música foi cantado por Moira Lambert, da banda cult indie Faith Over Reason, que posteriormente lançou material solo sob o nome Moira.

O B-side da edição 12" apresenta uma versão remixada em que a melodia é acentuada por um melodica tocado por Pete Astor, o que inspirou o remix aclamado de Andrew Weatherall.

O single foi gravado em apenas uma tarde, junto com a faixa "Kiss and Make Up", demonstrando a intenção inicial dos membros do Saint Etienne de produzir covers com vocalistas rotativos.

Durante a gravação, o engenheiro Ian Catt relatou que a equipe tentou fazer a música em compasso 4/4, enquanto a composição original era em compasso 3/4, refletindo uma tensão criativa na produção.
