A versão mais elogiada de “Shipbuilding” foi gravada por Robert Wyatt e lançada como single em agosto de 1982, poucos meses após o fim da Guerra das Malvinas.
Embora não tenha alcançado sucesso imediato, a canção só se tornou um hit quando foi relançada oito meses depois, coincidindo com o primeiro aniversário do conflito.
A letra, escrita por Elvis Costello, foi inspirada nas áreas tradicionais de construção naval britânicas — Clydeside, Merseyside (Cammell Laird), Nordeste da Inglaterra e Belfast (Harland and Wolff) — que viram um boom econômico ao produzir navios para substituir os afundados na guerra.
Em setembro de 2013, Costello colaborou com o grupo The Roots para criar “Cinco Minutos con Vos”, uma resposta que narra a perspectiva argentina e inclui trechos cantados em espanhol pela artista La Marisoul.
