A frase "rude boy", que virou o refrão principal e apegado da música, nasceu inicialmente apenas como uma introdução, mas foi tão cativante que as compositoras decidiram transformá-la no gancho central da faixa.
A letra surgiu de forma quase improvisada durante uma sessão de escrita "free-style", com Rihanna entrando na cabine de gravação enquanto os produtores anotavam ideias e a influência do Caribe moldando a direção da canção.
O clipe foi dirigido por Melina Matsoukas em janeiro de 2010 em Los Angeles, utilizando um fundo verde (greenscreen) para criar um visual que Rihanna descreveu como diferente de seus trabalhos anteriores, apostando em cores vibrantes e trajes inspirados nas rainhas do dancehall jamaicano.
"Rude Boy" alcançou o topo da parada Billboard Hot 100, tornando-se o primeiro hit número 1 de Rihanna vinda do álbum Rated R e, na época de março de 2010, sua sexta vitória geral como artista gravadora.
Rihanna explicou à revista Q que a letra retrata o arquétipo do "bad boy" de rua, aquele tipo de pessoa com mal Reputation que, curiosamente, muitas vezes atrai o interesse das garotas.
A produção foi liderada pela dupla Stargate, com co-produção de Rob Swire, unindo forças com os letristas Mikkel S. Eriksen, Tor Erik Hermansen, Ester Dean, Makeba Riddick e a própria Rihanna.
