A faixa foi gravada no estúdio em Oxfordshire no fim de janeiro de 2000, depois de diversas sessões de demo ao longo de 1999.
Os arranjos de cordas foram executados pela Orchestra of St John’s, dentro de uma igreja próxima ao estúdio, e o compositor Jonny Greenwood usou o instrumento ondes Martenot.
Em 1998, Radiohead apresentou a música pela primeira vez ao vivo durante a turnê, e a performance de prova de som aparece no documentário “Meeting People Is Easy”.
O título da canção homenageia o livro de 1985 “How to Disappear Completely and Never Be Found” de Doug Richmond.
Uma faixa de cordas isoladas da música aparece na compilação “Kid Amnesia”.
O texto da letra foi inspirado em uma conversa com Michael Stipe, que aconselhou o vocalista Thom Yorke a “fechar as persianas” e a se afastar da cena.
