A música foi composta, produzida e interpretada por R. Kelly especificamente para a trilha sonora do filme Space Jam, lançado em 1996.
R. Kelly se reuniu com Michael Jordan em uma quadra de basquete em Chicago, onde Jordan pessoalmente pediu que ele escrevesse uma música para seu próximo filme.
O cantor afirmou que, logo após assistir a uma projeção secreta de Space Jam, ele criou a melody que se tornaria "I Believe I Can Fly", sabendo que aquela faixa o levaria para além do R&B tradicional.
A canção estreou na 26ª posição da Billboard Hot 100 em 14 de dezembro de 1996 e subiu para a 2ª posição na semana seguinte.
"I Believe I Can Fly" ficou parada na segunda posição da parada musical por quatro semanas consecutivas, impedida de chegar ao topo apenas por "Unbreak My Heart", de Toni Braxton.
Embora tenha sido lançada originalmente em 26 de novembro de 1996, a faixa só foi incluída no álbum de estúdio de R. Kelly em 1998.
