“U.N.I.T.Y.” foi lançada como single pelo selo Motown em 9 de novembro de 1993 nos EUA e em 6 de janeiro de 1994 no Reino Unido, fazendo parte do terceiro álbum de estúdio de Queen Latifah, *Black Reign* (1993).
A música aborda o desrespeito às mulheres, incluindo assédio nas ruas, violência doméstica e o uso de insultos femininos no hip‑hop, e por isso muitas rádios e TVs transmitiram o single sem censurar termos como “bitch” e “hoes”.
O refrão de “U.N.I.T.Y.” interpolou a canção “Unity”, de Desmond Dekker, enquanto o beat original incorpora um sample de “Message from the Inner City”, do grupo de jazz The Crusaders.
Uma versão alternativa chamada “U.N.I.T.Y. (Queen Ruff Neck Boot)” troca grande parte do sample de jazz por um ritmo mais puro de hip‑hop e aparece na coletânea *20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection: The Best of Queen Latifah* como versão limpa.
O tema foi incluído na trilha sonora da série *Living Single*, protagonizada pela própria Latifah, que estreou no mesmo ano de lançamento da música.
