Public Image Ltd foi formada por John Lydon, ex-Sex Pistols, logo após sua saída em 1978, marcando o início de um projeto mais experimental e anti-rock.
O álbum de estreia, *First Issue* (1978), já apresentava um som abrasivo que misturava dub, noise, funk e disco, antecipando a identidade sonora única da banda.
Em 1979, *Metal Box* foi lançado, expandindo o som para a avant-garde e sendo frequentemente citado como um dos álbuns mais importantes do pós-punk.
Em 1984, após a saída de Keith Levene e Jah Wobble, o grupo se tornou basicamente um veículo solo de Lydon, que produziu o álbum comercialmente bem-sucedido *This Is What You Want ... This Is What You Get*.
A banda retornou em 2009, lançando novos trabalhos como *What the World Needs Now...* (2015), demonstrando a longevidade e a capacidade de reinventar o som ao longo das décadas.
