A canção “Lisztomania” foi escrita como uma referência ao frenesi cultural gerado pelo compositor húngaro do século XIX, Franz Liszt.
Thomas Mars, vocalista do Phoenix, explicou que a música mistura influências de várias fontes, incluindo o legado histórico de Liszt e o ambiente histórico de Versalhes, onde a banda cresceu.
O título “Lisztomania” alude ao termo usado para descrever a mania de fãs que Liszt provocava em suas apresentações, refletindo a ideia de “mash‑up” de influências que a banda buscava.
Em 2010, “Lisztomania” foi incluída na trilha sonora do sexto episódio da série documental da PBS “Circus”, ampliando sua presença na mídia televisiva.
Segundo entrevista ao jornal gratuito Washington DC Express, a banda considerou que o aspecto visual e a sensação de estar cercada por referências históricas contribuíram para a criação da música.
