A gravação de “Kyoto” contou com um arranjo denso que inclui guitarra de doze cordas, sintetizadores, autoharp e mellotron, além de metais de Nathaniel Walcott e voz de Jenny Lee Lindberg.
O produtor Tony Berg sugeriu acelerar o ritmo da faixa, resultando em um tom mais luminoso e alegre, algo que Bridgers aceitou pois estava cansada de gravar baladas lentas.
O vídeo musical, dirigido por Nina Ljeti, foi filmado em Los Angeles diante de um fundo verde e depois sobreposto com imagens de Kyoto, como a arcade e o santuário Fushimi Inari-taisha, em vez da cidade real.
No clipe, Bridgers aparece em fantasia de esqueleto, pilotando lasers com os olhos para salvar seus companheiros de banda (Emily Bannon, Marshall Vore e Harrison Whitford) do Godzilla.
A canção foi lançada em 9 de abril de 2020 como o segundo single do álbum “Punisher” e recebeu indicação ao Grammy, refletindo seu impacto crítico no cenário musical brasileiro e internacional.
