Simone combina sua técnica de piano classicamente treinada com elementos de gospel, jazz e ritmos africanos, além de usar ostinatos intensos e percussão hipnótica na arrumação.
Durante as décadas de 1960, ela costumava finalizar seus shows na cena folclórica de Greenwich Village com extensões dessa música que duravam até 20 minutos, incluindo seções improvisadas.
