O single “Blue Monday” tem quase 7 minutos e 29 segundos, sendo um dos maiores discos 12” que já chartou no Reino Unido.
Apesar de ter vendido mais de um milhão de cópias no UK, a faixa nunca recebeu disco de ouro oficial porque Factory Records não era membro da British Phonographic Industry.
O arranjo da música foi inspirado em quatro outras canções: “Dirty Talk” de Klein & MBO, “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)” de Sylvester, “Our Love” de Donna Summer e a introdução de teclado de “Uranium” (Kraftwerk).
A performance ao vivo no Top of the Pops de 31 março 1983 foi marcada por falhas técnicas – os sintetizadores “andavam fora do compasso” e o resultado foi considerado “ruim” pelo próprio drummer, Stephen Morris.
A versão remixada “Blue Monday 88”, feita por Quincy Jones e John Potoker, alcançou o número 3 nas paradas britânicas e o topo em Nova Zelândia, consolidando o hit como um dos maiores sucessos da década de 80.
O design da capa original, criado por Peter Saville, utilizava blocos de cor codificados para esconder o nome do grupo e do single; o código só podia ser decifrado a partir da contracapa de “Power, Corruption & Lies”.
