“One” foi escrita em novembro de 1987 por James Hetfield e Lars Ulrich e tem como base o romance anti‑guerra “Johnny Got His Gun”, de Dalton Trumbo, cujo próprio filme de 1971 foi usado nas imagens do primeiro videoclipe da banda.
A abertura com a modulação A‑G foi inspirada na música “Buried Alive”, do Venom, conforme revelou Hetfield em entrevista à Guitar World em 1991.
Foi o primeiro single a apresentar o baixista Jason Newsted, lançando‑se em 1989 e alcançando o Top 40 dos EUA (#35), mesmo sem apoio das rádios pop devido à sua duração de sete minutos e meio.
Em 1991 a faixa conquistou o Grammy de Melhor Performance de Metal, “vingando” a controvérsia de 1989, quando o prêmio de Hard Rock/Metal foi para Jethro Tull.
“One” integra o repertório de jogos como Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, Guitar Hero: Metallica e também aparece em Fortnite, mantendo sua presença em mídias interativas.
Uma versão ao vivo da canção foi incluída no álbum S&M de 1999, gravado com a Orquestra Sinfônica de São Francisco, ampliando seu alcance além do thrash metal.
