A gravação de “Erotica” contou com a produção conjunta de Madonna e Shep Pettibone, que também colaborou na escrita junto a Anthony Shimkin.
A faixa foi lançada como single principal do álbum homônimo em 29 de setembro de 1992, sob os selos Maverick, Sire e Warner Bros. Records.
“Erotica” entrou no US Billboard Hot 100 na posição 13, sendo um dos maiores debutantes da época, e terminou em número 3, enquanto conquistou o topo de charts em países como Finlândia, Hungria, Itália e Grécia, além de liderar a lista US Dance Club Play.
O videoclipe, dirigido por Fabien Baron, exibiu Madonna vestida de dominatrix mascarada e incluía cenas de gravação do seu livro “Sex”, com participações de Naomi Campbell e Isabella Rossellini; foi transmitido pela MTV apenas três vezes após as 10 pm e acabou sendo banido.
