Ed King sonhou com os acordes e os dois solos principais de “Sweet Home Alabama” durante a noite após um ensaio, acordando com a melodia “nota por nota” e apresentando-a ao grupo no dia seguinte.
A guitarra usada na gravação era uma Fender Stratocaster de 1972, considerada de má qualidade por King, que precisou subir o volume da Marshall amp ao máximo; o instrumento hoje está exposto no Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
A frase “Turn it up” no início da música não foi planejada como parte da canção; Ronnie Van Zant a pronunciou ao pedir ao produtor Al Kooper e ao engenheiro Rodney Mills que aumentassem o volume nos fones de ouvido.
No verso segundo, quase oculto, pode‑se ouvir Al Kooper cantar “Southern Man” em um leve sussurro no canal esquerdo, um detalhe que Ronnie Van Zant pediu para remover por medo de plagiar Neil Young.
A contagem inicial da faixa (“1, 2, 3…”) foi feita por Ed King; inserir a contagem era um toque característico do produtor Al Kooper nas primeiras faixas dos álbuns que ele produzia.
