O diretor Taylor Hackford pediu a Lionel Richie que compusesse um tema com o título "White Nights" para o filme de mesmo nome, mas como ele não conseguiu, enviou uma demo de "Say You, Say Me", que acabou sendo aprovada e incluída nos créditos finais.
A música foi gravada principalmente na sala de estar de Lionel Richie e foi produzida por ele junto com James Anthony Carmichael.
"Say You, Say Me" não aparece na trilha sonora oficial do filme *White Nights* porque a Motown não queria que o primeiro single de Richie após o sucesso do álbum *Can't Slow Down* (1983) fosse lançado por outro selo.
A faixa atingiu a primeira posição na Billboard Hot 100 por quatro semanas, entre dezembro de 1985 e janeiro de 1986, vendendo um milhão de cópias nos Estados Unidos.
Ela venceu o Oscar de Melhor Canção Original de 1985 e também recebeu o Globo de Ouro para Melhor Canção Original.
O clipe oficial, dirigido pelo diretor do filme Taylor Hackford, foi composto por cenas inseridas do filme *White Nights*.
