A faixa “Disorder” foi gravada em abril de 1979 no Strawberry Studios, em Stockport, sendo o primeiro disco gravado para o álbum *Unknown Pleasures*.
O título surgiu de um processo típico da banda: a música evoluiu a partir de longos ensaios de jam, sendo já tocada em shows antes de ser gravada.
A produção de Martin Hannett gerou um grande debate interno, já que a banda queria um som mais pesado e dinâmico, enquanto o produtor buscava uma estética mais escura e isolada.
Apesar das divergências, “Disorder” acabou se firmando como um clássico do post‑punk e é considerado um dos trabalhos de maior destaque de Hannett, junto com “She’s Lost Control”.
A participação dos quatro membros – Curtis, Hook, Sumner e Morris – na composição reflete a abordagem colaborativa que caracterizava a criação musical do grupo.
