Lançado em abril de 1987 como o segundo single do grupo, a música catapultou o Johnny Hates Jazz ao sucesso internacional, reaching a posição de número 5 no Reino Unido e número 2 nos Estados Unidos.
A faixa serviu como o catalisador para o álbum de estreia da banda, Turn Back the Clock, lançado em 1988, que foi auto-produzido e chegou a vender quatro milhões de cópias.
Embora "Shattered Dreams" tenha sido o hit inicial, o álbum que a precedeu comercialmente, Turn Back the Clock, alcançou o topo das paradas de álbuns no Reino Unido (Número 1).
O sucesso do single abriu caminho para outras duas músicas do mesmo álbum, "Heart of Gold" e "I Don't Want to Be a Hero", que também entraram no Top 20.
O nome da banda, Johnny Hates Jazz, originou-se de uma situação social em que o cunhado do guitarrista Mike Nocito quebrou um disco de vinil do pianista de jazz Dave Brubeck.
A frase que deu origem ao nome do grupo foi dita pela esposa de um amigo do produtor Phil Thornalley, que comentou "Johnny Hates Jazz" em resposta ao disco quebrado na festa.
