Embora tenha sido escrita por June Carter e Merle Kilgore, a música já existia em forma de "(Love's) Ring of Fire" quando foi gravada pela irmã de June, Anita Carter, em 1962, mas só atingiu sucesso quando Johnny Cash regravou-a.
A versão de Cash ficou no topo das paradas americanas por sete semanas consecutivas, tornando-se o maior sucesso de sua carreira até então.
June Carter explicou que a frase "Love is like a burning ring of fire" vinha de um livro de poesia de seu tio A. P. Carter, evidenciando a influência familiar na composição.
