Lançado em fevereiro de 1960 pela Atlantic Records, este foi o primeiro álbum de John Coltrane como líder na gravadora, para a qual ele assinou contrato no ano anterior.
As faixas "Naima" e "Syeeda's Song Flute" são homagens pessoais: a primeira leva o nome de sua esposa na época e a segunda, de sua filha adotiva.
A música "Mr. P.C." foi nomeada pelas iniciais do baixista Paul Chambers, um dos músicos que tocaram no álbum.
"Cousin Mary" foi composta em homenagem a Mary Lyerly, prima mais nova de John Coltrane.
Em 2004, a Biblioteca do Congresso dos EUA selecionou o álbum para entrar no Registro Nacional de Gravações, um dos 50 registros escolhidos naquele ano.
O disco alcançou o status de disco de ouro em 2018, após vender 500.000 cópias.
