A música foi originalmente escrita por Angela Hunte e Janet Sewell‑Ulepic como uma homenagem a Nova Iorque, mas só chegou a Jay‑Z depois de ser reencaminhada por um associado da EMI Music Publishing, que sugeriu que ele a escutasse.
Embora a versão final tenha Alicia Keys no refrão, a demo original contava com a própria Hunte cantando; a troca para Keys foi feita após Jay‑Z ouvir o loop de piano da faixa.
