A canção foi escrita por Andrew Farriss, Michael Hutchence e Kirk Pengilly durante as gravações de 1990 do álbum X, com contribuições de Chris Thomas ao refrão e arranjo, conforme a nota de capa da edição especial de 2002.
O tema da faixa reflete a saudade de família e amigos que Farriss sentiu enquanto a banda estava em turnê.
Em 1997, “By My Side” foi tocada no funeral de Michael Hutchence, ao lado de “Never Tear Us Apart”, em memória do vocalista.
Depois de exibição do minissérie “INXS: Never Tear Us Apart” em 2014, a música subiu novamente às paradas australianas, alcançando o número 67 no ARIA Singles Chart.
