Hank Ballard, cujo nome de nascimento era John Henry Kendricks, nasceu em 18 de novembro de 1927 e foi o vocalista principal do The Midnighters, uma das primeiras bandas de rock and roll dos anos 1950.
O sucesso “Work with Me, Annie” foi um dos primeiros singles que consolidou o Midnighters no cenário musical, lançando a música que mais tarde gerou duas “answer songs”: “Annie Had a Baby” e “Annie's Aunt Fannie”.
Hank Ballard não só compôs e gravou “Work with Me, Annie” em 1950‑51, mas também foi responsável pela composição e gravação original de “The Twist” em 1959, antes de Chubby Checker popularizar o sucesso no mesmo ano seguinte.
Em 1990, o legado de Hank Ballard foi reconhecido com sua indução ao Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, destacando seu papel pioneiro no desenvolvimento do gênero.
