“The Great Pretender”, gravada pelos The Platters, foi lançada em novembro de 1955 e se destacou como um clássico do estilo doo‑wop.
A canção foi escrita e produzida por Buck Ram, que além de gerente da banda também já era um compositor bem-sucedido antes de assumir o papel de produtor.
No Billboard Top 100 a música chegou ao primeiro lugar, enquanto no Reino Unido alcançou a quinta posição nas paradas.
A versão de Freddie Mercury, lançada anos depois, também fez grande sucesso, chegando ao quarto lugar nas paradas britânicas.
Entre as várias regravações, a de Sam Cooke inspirou Chrissie Hynde a nomear sua banda “The Pretenders”.
Em 1956, o humorista de rádio americano Stan Freberg criou uma paródia da canção, demonstrando seu impacto cultural imediato.
