A versão original do single de 1989 não foi um sucesso imediato, mas só alcançou a posição nº 6 no Billboard Hot 100 em janeiro de 1991 depois de ser usada no filme *Wild at Heart* de David Lynch.

O videoclipe mais famoso, dirigido por Herb Ritts, foi filmado em Kamoamoa, uma nova praia de areia preta formada pelo fluxo de lava do vulcão Kilauea, e contou com Helena Christensen e Chris Isaak sem roupas, apesar de camufladas por ângulos de câmera criativos.

O vídeo conquistou três prêmios MTV – Melhor Vídeo Masculino, Melhor Cinematografia e Melhor Vídeo de Um Filme – e foi reconhecido como #13 nos 100 Melhores Vídeos da VH1 e #1 na lista de 40 Vídeos Mais Sexys da Fuse em 2010.

A composição foi inspirada em uma ligação telefônica de uma garota que buscava um encontro casual, refletindo o tema de atração forte por pessoas potencialmente prejudiciais; o riff de guitarra principal foi executado por James Calvin Wilsey.

Antes da gravação final, várias versões foram gravadas, e o baixo e a bateria (exceto os pratos) foram amostrados de gravações anteriores e em loop, resultando na sonoridade "sombria e conflituosa" citada por AllMusic.
