O trecho de guitarra “não planejado” de Louis Shelton foi gravado com uma Fender Telecaster ligada a um amplificador Fender Princeton Reverb de 1969, usando apenas um pedal Boss de distorção básico.
Os músicos de sessão de “Lowdown” – David Paich, David Hungate e Jeff Porcaro – mais tarde formariam a banda Toto, um fato que conecta o hit ao surgimento de uma das superband de rock dos anos 80.
A canção foi lançada em junho de 1976 pelo selo Columbia, acompanhando o álbum *Silk Degrees*, que consolidou Boz Scaggs como um dos principais artistas da década.
A produção de “Lowdown” ficou a cargo de Joe Wissert, que também trabalhou com artistas como The Eagles e Steely Dan, reforçando a qualidade sonora do disco.
