Debbie Harry e Chris Stein escreveram a faixa em 1979, inspirados por diversos eventos de rap em Nova York que começaram a frequentar em 1978, após serem levados por Fab 5 Freddy ao primeiro deles.
"Rapture" tem o recorde de ser a primeira música com vocais de rap a atingir o número 1 nas paradas dos EUA e também o primeiro videoclipe de rap transmitido pela MTV.
O single permaneceu por duas semanas no topo da Billboard Hot 100, vendeu um milhão de cópias nos Estados Unidos e foi certificado como Ouro pela RIAA, além de ter alcançado o terceiro lugar no Canadá e o quinto na Austrália e no Reino Unido.
A música ganhou novas versões, incluindo uma reinterpretação de Alicia Keys para o filme Sex and the City 2 (2010), uma de Lizzo para a série Made In Chelsea e outra de Erasure como faixa bônus no álbum Cowboy (1997).
