O título e o tema da canção foram inspirados pelo filme de terror francês de 1960 "Les Yeux sans visage", dirigido por Georges Franju, cuja trama sobre umcirurgião que tenta reconstruir o rosto da filha assassinando vítimas ressoou com o decaimento moral que Billy Idol vivenciava em Nova York.
A ex-namorada de Billy Idol, Perri Lister, canta os backing vocais no refrão, repetindo a frase em francês "Les yeux sans visage", que era o título original do filme de horror que inspirou a música.
A parte de baixo da canção foi uma dificuldade na gravação até que Billy Idol e Steve Stevens contrataram Sal Cuevas, um baixista de Nova York conhecido por trabalhar com música salsa e orquestras de Broadway, que realizou a parte no estilo reggae desejado por Idol.
As letras improvisadas estilo rap sobre o riff de guitarra central surgiram da influência da cultura da época em Nova York, onde o rap estava presente em todas as discotecas e clubes, fazendo sentido para Idol começar a falar com um tom "streetwise" após sua balada cantada.
"Eyes Without a Face" atingiu a posição #4 na Billboard Hot 100 por duas semanas em julho de 1984, tornando-se o primeirosingle do artista a entrar no top 10 nos Estados Unidos.
O processo de composição começou com Billy Idol explicando a melodia e a estrutura básica ao guitarrista Steve Stevens, que desenvolveu um padrão de quatro acordes e criou o riff pesado de rock que serve de base para a seção intermediária da música.
