“Wake Me Up” foi lançada em junho de 2013 como o primeiro single do álbum de estreia de Avicii, *True*, que saiu em 17 de setembro do mesmo ano.
A voz que canta a parte vocal principal é de Aloe Blacc, embora ele não tenha sido creditado oficialmente na faixa.
O guitarrista Mike Einziger, do Incubus, contribuiu com a guitarra acústica da música.
Avicii apresentou a canção ao vivo pela primeira vez no Ultra Music Festival, em Miami, acompanhada por banda ao vivo, o que gerou confusão e até ira entre parte do público de música eletrônica.
